SPECIAL REPORT ON OUR INTERNATIONAL SERVICE ACTIVITIES 2008-2009

1.       International Service 2009

o        Director Pushpa announced that our Matching Grant for a water project with the Rotary Club of Thane East has been approved by The Rotary Foundation.  It will provide clean water to a village of about 1,500 people using a bore well.

o        The Rotary Club of Pungar, India reported that it will complete 1,500 cataract surgeries in November to meet the commitments under our Matching Grant with that club.

o        The Rotary Club of Thane East finished another Matching Grant project, which we helped fund, in June for a check dam to provide clean drinking water.  The club had funds left over and is seeking approval to use them for a small water purification unit.  The Rotary Foundation must approve the request.

o        Treasurer Bill indicated that the club has sent a check for $370 in support of the Green Planet project in Indonesia.

Medical mission to Limon, Honduras-----2008-2009
Being a Rotarian has definitely has opened the world to me-Dr Pushpa Chandwani

My friend Janaki  and I  planned to volunteer for 2 weeks somewhere not too far from the US. so I checked online and sure enough  Caroline Health foundation was looking for volunteer physicians.

Our group included 4 physician,2 RNs,a pharmacist and the group leaders,Ken and Peggy.

They picked us up at the San Pedro Ula airport.and from there we drove to Ceiba. The next morning we drove to Limon. The rooms where we resided were simple and comfortable..They arranged 2 cooks to make our food..The clinic was downstairs.Peggy gave us wake up call at 7am.we had to be down at sharp 8am.where we saw close to 40-50 patients a day. We also held clinics in 2 other towns.we saw a lot of tropical diseases.

During our stay we also visited the local orphanage---very cramped and poor.

Sister leonarda runs the place.she hopes that in future there would be a bigger place for the children. After that Ken and his group  actively started looking for a land to buy and build a new orphanage.

I volunteered my husband Nanik’s services as an architect to make the plans for the new orphanage he has finally completed them. (Sept 2009)

While in San Pedro de Sula I met one of the local Rotarians named Carlos  and have been in touch with him  ever since.
He has helped Ken to meet other Rotarians close to Limon who will find local engineer and contractor to help with the this project. Being a Rotarian has definetly has opened the world to me.
